Does Wick Actually Block Apps, or Just Remind Me? | Wick

Frequently asked questions

Does Wick actually block apps, or only remind me?
It actually blocks them. The Shield puts distracting apps behind a wall while you focus, built on Family Controls / ManagedSettings / DeviceActivity — which needs a real device and your authorisation.
Can I get out of a session early?
Yes, and that is deliberate. The Shield is a breath of friction, never a cage — there is always an exit.
Does it block system apps?
It blocks distracting apps you choose, rather than taking over the device. What it does not do is prevent you from leaving.
Is Wick free or a subscription?
Wick is free to use. Wick Pro is a one-time purchase — no subscription — unlocking deep-guard mode, candle skins, ambient sounds and more themes.

The short answer

A focus timer that only counts minutes does not change what you do with them. The difference between a reminder and a guard is whether the friction is real.

Wick's Shield puts distracting apps behind a wall while you focus. It is built on Family Controls / ManagedSettings / DeviceActivity, which means it needs a real device and your authorisation — the system will not grant this silently.

Friction, not a cage

The design intent is worth stating because it is the unusual part: the Shield is "a breath of friction, never a cage." There is always an exit.

That is a deliberate choice. A guard you cannot leave teaches you to distrust the tool, and the next session is harder to start. The wall exists to make reaching for the phone a decision rather than a reflex — not to make it impossible.

What it blocks

Distracting apps you choose. It is not a lockdown that takes over the device, and it does not stop you from leaving.

What Wick costs

Worth being clear, because focus apps usually run on subscriptions: Wick is free to use, and Wick Pro is a one-time purchase — no subscription. Pro unlocks deep-guard mode, candle skins, ambient sounds and more themes.
