Make a Video of the People Who Keep Appearing | Encore

Frequently asked questions

Is face recognition on by default?
No. It stays off until you switch it on, it runs entirely on this iPhone, and one tap erases everything it found.
Does face recognition upload anything?
No. It runs entirely on this iPhone — the people it finds are never sent anywhere.
Can I name the people Encore gathers?
Yes, if you want to. A piece can be given a name.
How long does the data stay?
Until you delete it. One tap erases everything it found.

The short answer

Turn on Recognise people and Encore gathers the ones who show up in your library again and again, and gives each of them a piece of their own.

Someone across four years. The friend who is in every trip.

You can give them a name if you want to.

Facial recognition of people's faces is not a normal feature toggle, so the defaults are the feature:

  • It stays off until you switch it on
  • It runs entirely on this iPhone
  • One tap erases everything it found

That last point is the one that makes it defensible. A feature that finds things about other people — people who did not consent to being identified — has to be revocable in a single action, not through a settings maze.

What it produces

Each recurring person gets a piece of their own, cut from the photos where they appear across your library — which is a different, and often better, way to revisit a person than scrolling a timeline for their face.

As with everything Encore selects, each piece says what it is made of, so the basis is visible rather than asserted.

On device

There is no upload, no account and no ads. The recognition runs locally, which means the set of faces it has gathered never leaves the device unless you choose to export a piece.
