How to Add Captions to a Video | ReelCraft

Frequently asked questions

Can ReelCraft generate captions automatically?
Yes. ReelCraft captures system-wide screen recording through a Broadcast Upload extension and runs speech recognition on it, so a clip of what was said on screen becomes a caption track you can then edit.
Can I style the captions?
Yes. Captions are animated titles and subtitles, so they take the same fonts, strokes, shadows and glow as any other text layer on the timeline.
Do captions export with the video?
Yes. They are layers on the timeline, so they are part of the exported file rather than something you have to add afterwards in another app.

Captions from a screen recording

The fastest route to real captions is to record what is being said while it happens:

  1. Start a system-wide screen recording — the audio ReelCraft captures includes the speech.
  2. Make the recording you need, then stop it.
  3. Import it into a project. Speech recognition produces a caption track you can edit.

This is the useful shape for tutorials, app walkthroughs and anything where the words on screen matter more than the picture.

Styling the caption track

Captions are ordinary text layers, so everything you can do to a title applies to them:

  • Fonts — pick from the full set, not just a default
  • Strokes and shadows — the difference between a caption readable over a busy background and one that disappears into it
  • Glow — for captions over dark footage
  • Animation — captions can animate in rather than appearing flat

Because they are timeline layers, you can place them, retime them, and split or trim them independently of the video underneath.

Why this beats adding captions elsewhere

A caption added after export has to be re-timed by eye against the finished video, and the moment it slips it is wrong forever. A caption that lives on the timeline can be nudged, trimmed, and checked at any frame while you are still editing.
